Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. Players with the last name Martinez dominated the headlines this week, one more positively than the other, and Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman). The Cards, out of the blue, extend Jose Martinez for a couple of years. What's the thinking there? Is it just on humanitarian grounds? Carlos Martinez was shut down earlier in the week and kept from throwing until March 5. What does this mean for his future? Is moving him to the bullpen really the right thing to do? (I'll tell you right now, this is a topic that gets Tara a bit worked up.) Also, there have been two actual Cardinal baseball games! They mean nothing, but it's great to see them!

Another season is starting, both in baseball and for Gateway, and Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman) start diving into the Cardinal news of the day. Adam Wainwright elaborated on his thoughts about the current labor market and issues, something the commissioner seemed to take offense over. Was it wise for Uncle Charlie to speak out? Brett Cecil lost a lot last year and has lost a lot of pounds this year. Can he be an effective lefty and, if so, how does that complicate even more the bullpen? It may not be the longest show, but you have to warm up and stretch before hitting the drills, right?

They then talk lineup construction before getting into some of the reports from the Warmup, including the curious case of Marcell Ozuna. It was a blockbuster week for the Redbirds as they brought in Paul Goldschmidt for three players and a draft pick. Was it too much for one year of Goldy? And does this make the Cardinals the favorite in the NL Central?
